A 27-year-old Broken Arrow man has been on the border of Mexico helping those affected by Hurricane Hanna.

Hurricane Hanna made landfall in Texas on Saturday but would eventually charge across northeastern Mexico.

“It’s definitely been scary because of how fast the rain came,” Griffiths said.

Matthew Griffiths is from Broken Arrow. He has 10 years of experience with the American Red Cross and recently joined UNICEF. For the past year, Griffiths said he has been working at the border of Mexico with non-profits.

“Working with people affected by the 2019 border crisis,” Griffiths said.

Since the storm decided to pass over the U.S.-Mexico border Sunday, some parts of Mexico have been a disaster area.

“It’s one of the hardest hit areas and that’s also a big COVID hotspot,” Griffiths said.

Video from Reynosa shows staff members at a hospital attempting to get COVID-19 patients to higher ground during the storm.

“The help they have been trying to get has been made it more difficult by what has happened with the hurricane,” Griffiths said.

Griffiths said he plans to leave the border of Mexico to move back to Broken Arrow next week.
