Tulsa parents now have diapers, wipes and other resources after a Diaper Giveaway Saturday morning.
This giveaway event was part of Be Well Community Development Corporation’s (Be Well CDC) efforts to combat increasing diaper needs.
"We have gotten to hear from women, in North Tulsa particularly, about how they're meeting needs of their families and diapers has come up as a need," said Dr. Marshan Marick with Be Well CDC.
Dr. Marick said that's how the "North Tulsa Diaper Giveaway" came to life, by speaking with the community and those conversations drove the need for change.
"As we started looking at the data looking at all of the things that are happening regarding health disparities for expecting moms, we started thinking about and looking at ways that we could start to solve problems and address systems that could change this," said Dr. Marick
Parents received diapers, wipes, postpartum care packages, free resources and more on Saturday.
Dr. Marick said it's all to help lift the burden off families in need.
"We’re looking at what can we do to alleviate some of the needs that people are having and pointing them to resources that are available to them in the community," said Dr. Marick.
Those resources -- healthcare, social service agencies and even transportation.
Organizers helped participants get connected with their options.
Organizers said this is stemmed from a larger project Be Well CDC is working on.
"There are disparities in health outcomes for African Americans and other minorities as it relates to pregnancy and childbirth," said Dr. Marick.
Be Well CDC said maybe this is a way to start to solve those disparities.
