McAlester Community Holds Benefit Dinner To Honor Officer Who Died Of COVID-19

People in McAlester are gathering today to remember a law enforcement officer who served his community for more than 20 years.

The McAlester community is honoring Danny Kelley today with a benefit day at area Chili's restaurants to raise funds for the family he left behind.

"I couldn't be going through this without that love and support, "said Shelley Kelley, the wife of Officer Danny Kelley.

It's been a tough two weeks for the City of McAlester after Officer Danny Kelley died from COVID-19. The community is honoring the man they say left a lasting impact,

"Everywhere I go I come into contact with somebody whose life Danny has touched, and they want to help."

The manager at Chili's organized a benefit in support of Officer Kelley. The McAlester Police Chief says it just shows how much of an impact Kelley really had.

"What he meant this community that they're willing to do that...it's their own idea. They developed this idea to do something to honor Danny and to help his family out at the same time," said Chief Kevin Hearod.

15% percent of the proceeds from today's sales at Chili's will go to Kelley's family. His wife Shelley just wants to say thank you.

"I'm truly humbled by your kindness, and your care and your prayers, and your generosity, uhm, it's making these hard days a bit easier," said Kelley.

She knows the McAlester community has made her husband proud of where he lived.

"I think he'll be proud of his community and how they're taking care of his family."

When you order, you need to mention the "Give Back Event" fundraiser for officer Kelley's family, otherwise, the money won't be set aside.

On Saturday, February 12th, McAlester High School will host a benefit dinner for the family of Officer Danny Kelley serving fried car fish and sides.

Oklahoma State 4-H Ambassador, Reed Marcum, will also be accepting donations for a silent auction. A portion of the proceeds will go to the family too.
