McLain Football Player Takes The Field And The Crown At Homecoming Game

A football player at McLain High School made history during halftime. The homecoming game is nothing new, but the homecoming queen doesn't usually take part in the action.

In his first year as head coach, Milton Harper feels he has something to prove.

"It's definitely a challenge because you are trying to get it out of the kids that sometimes don't believe or don't know how much talent they have," he said.

One of his players—his long snapper—knows the feeling well.

"She said she wanted to play football,” said Harper. “I thought she was playing and lying. It was different, but we gave her a shot."

Harmoni Callins is a senior and the only girl on the McLain Titans football team.

"I was just really excited to play football and be a part of the team,” she said. “I feel like in a lot of situations I have had to since I am a girl, but I don't think there's ever been a moment where I have felt like I wasn't a part of the team."

Coach Harper says Harmoni works hard and has improved since joining the team three years ago.

"I use her as an example a lot to them. Like, hey, we have a girl that is playing football, and she challenges us every day. Everything she starts, she finishes. I have been proud of her and of the growth that I have seen," Harper said.

In a recent game, she shone on the field, but not for her play.

"I was surprised,” said Harmoni. “Everyone told me they were going to win, but I was really surprised I won."

During halftime, Harmoni swapped out her helmet for a tiara. She was crowned homecoming queen.

"I have been running for royal court for three years now, and this is the year that I finally got to be queen," she said.

She's an example to everyone, even her coach, to stay determined.

"I thought it was amazing, such an accomplishment because she plays football, and I don't think that ever happened to her," he said.
